What The Meaning Of Haredi Is

David Kelsey has a thought provoking piece posted on Jewschool regarding the concerted effort to out anonymous blogger UnOrthodox Jew. Kelsey writes:

If you succeed in gaining traction and a significant following in the ultra-Orthodox world, [exposing haredi corruption] we [i.e., the haredi thugs, a.k.a. kanaim] will:

1) Place your picture all over the net, and make fun of how you look.

2) Fabricate in a suggestive manner unsavory details about your personal past.

3) Attack your motivations, and ignore the important issues you raise.

4) Declare you mentally insane. You must be. You are fighting against us.

5) Harass you at your business and place of work, and list your work and home telephone numbers in hopes of getting you fired and harassing you into silence.

6) Mock your wife.

7) Assert that you are not rich (even if by our own depiction, you clearly are), as this is perhaps the most damaging form of character assassination for a layman in the charedi world, where the many, many impoverished know their place.…

You say in the rules that we must use facts and logic. At the top of the web-site you say ‘The seal of G-d is truth.’

So I’ll play by your rules, even though you don’t play by your own.

Have you ever heard of the Chafetz Chaim? I’m glad he didn’t live in this generation, to see so called ‘Torah’ Jews rip apart the real Torah Jews, and cause such arguments. But, maybe he is one of the people you don’t hold of? If you would read his book, you probably violate every single thing he says there, just by the fact of your website existing. Don’t you want the Bais HaMikdash rebuilt? Don’t you feel for the plight of the Jews in Israel? – Obviously not, because it’s people like you who causes Hashem to delay the Geula.

Oy! I hope that Hashem gives you a chance to do Teshuva – no Jew deserves geihinom, there’s always oppurtunities to go back and repent! But, the Rambam says that those who make the masses stray won’t get a chance to repent! Hashem Yeracheim Alecha.

I post even though I am sure you will delete it as sonn as you see it – just in the hope that some people do read it.

But nobody is dealing with the fact that whoever this is got THE WRONG GUY.

  3. No. Let’s do the usual thing. Bury our heads in the sand and pretend everything is ok in our little Jewish world. Let’s not deal with anything and claim lashon hara when someone tries (which is nothing more than an excuse to not deal with anything).

Remember. We killed the novi’s because they spoke the truth about our fellow Jews and exposed corruption and no one wanted to hear it. They spoke the truth so people would wake up. They also said that right before Moshiach comes, our Jewish leadership will be absolutely pathetic. Our Jewish leadership is referred to in Nach as G-d’s enemy…We killed them for it.

There are those in our Jewish world who are still fearful of hearing the truth and those who are willing to take risks to expose for the sake of waking up. In other words, the doers and the hiders. Better to go down a doer.

  4. NoDemonstrations

The problem is that this guy goes too far. Also, he is more of a mouth than an activist.

He reminds me of McCarthy, who actually did get rid of a few real Reds who were rightly perceived as a threat at the time, but then went off his rocker and found reds under every blanket in Washington DC.

I would have no problem, given the correct proof, to show up at the door of one of these sicko molestors and harass the living daylights out of him just as I would do with a drug dealer in the middle of a decent neighborhood. I am surprised this was not done with the universally despised Mondroputz – everyone knew about him ages ago.

But when he rants on the Internet about cases for which he has no proof, he discredits whatever good work he does.

I, for one, stopped reading him after the first week I discovered him.

On the other hand, just as with any other kook, it is best to let him rant and not comment, so that he gets the steam out of his system and perhaps can concentrate on the real, known, provable problem cases.

  5. No Demonstrations:

Blogging is one way of being an activist. :] So is sending emails, like to the UN for them not making a fuss about huzzy-bull-uhs hitting the UN Base with mortor, and injuring 3 chinese soldiers this past Sunday.

There are many ways in this day and age to be an activist. It takes both those who blog and email (armchair activists), as well as those who are able to physically get someplace to protest to make a difference. :] It’s called a symbiotic relationship. :]

  6. NoDemonstrations

The problem is that except in his own mind, UOJ has accomplished nothing with his rants. His original “catch” is still working with children, and he is mentioning names of people who are most probably innocent. Meanwhile, others are very aware of the problem. I know of one case where the molester was left to the justice system and the kids involved got counseling. (The justice system fouled up and he got off lightly but at least he is not working with kids. That is the best you can expect; it is impossible to detect a molester until the crime is committed. And remember the infamous McMartin case where the allegations were made up – this could easily happen in the frum community as blackmail for a beis din judgement etc.

This way, the molester just hides from justice and who knows who is a real victim because they are tarnished by association with a loudmouth yenta.

E-mail is a good idea – if you know you have a real miscreant, spam (or junk fax) the heck out of him. It has been done in get (agunah) cases. But don’t write a new version of the Boro Park Enquirer and expect to be taken seriously, especially if you mention others’ names and hide behind a pseudonym.

  7. It is nearly impossible to catch a molester. One of the problems I saw in the frum community was even when the kids were showing impossible to miss signs that they were being abused, the rabbis faithfully covered. The kids were too afraid to tell who it was because of the bold face lie that it’s lashon hara and the “punishment” is severe for such.

Distorted teaching and rabbis who don’t give a flip are a plague.

As for whether a person has accomplished anything through their “rants”. :] If through one’s “rants” even just one person wakes up, they’ve accomplished something. :]

Email the crap out of someone? I don’t think that is all that productive. :]Eventually you just get deleted. What I was thinking of, was on a broader scale. Getting others to join you in the email campaign. :]

I hear what you’re saying though, and to some extent agree.

  8. NoDemonstrations

The problem is that UOJ set things back by engaging in real loshon horo. Mondrowitz was a known offender (I don’t understand how Mondrowitz got away – Israel’s failure to extradite is to blame there because the community did not protect him – they knew darn well he was a sick man).

The UOJ blog found molesters under every shtender, and was out of hand. If he had introduced himself in some way and calmly stated the evidence, and then asked people to e-mail or call Kolko and Margulies, that might have worked. Having Kolko around children again shows that UOJ’s approach failed completely (or that there is no evidence and this is another McMartin case – I do not know).

In the meantime, a lawyer may benefit in some way from the civil suits, but little will be accomplished.
