More On Monsey Kosher Meat Scandal

The Associated Press reports:

“To sell non-kosher as kosher is one of the biggest acts of betrayal that a Jewish person can do to another,” said Rabbi Menachem Meir Weissmandel of Chemed Shul, a local synagogue. “This is the darkest day in the history of our community since we settled in this area many years ago.”

The butcher, Moshe Finkel, owns Shevach Meats, which buys kosher meats in bulk and slices and packages it for grocery stores, religious schools and Hasidic camps in the Catskill Mountains.

The state’s Department of Agriculture and Markets are trying to determine the origin of the chicken, whether it was ever certified as kosher and advertised as such at the store, a spokeswoman for the Agriculture Department said. Violators are subject to fines of up to USD 1,000.

Weissmandel said Finkel was banned from the grocery store. He said store owners confronted the butcher after they noticed the shelves lined with kosher meats, even though Finkel’s suppliers had not made a delivery. An early morning call to Finkel’s home Thursday was not returned.…

And, yes, pots, pans, dishes, flatware, other utensils and knives, cutting boards and countertops must be kashered. Consult your local rabbi for details.

How sad that someone in a responsible position could deceive the Jewish community of Monsey. An open and complete investigation is needed in cooperation with the State authorities and the Monsey Rabbis. Hiding facts will only stimulate rumors and lashon horah. A respected person should be appointed as official communicator between the investigating authorities and the public to avoid ruining any reputations. The first factual official statements should be issued within seven days after review by all the Monsey Rabbis. After the facts are discovered, we can worry about penalties and prevention.

I THINK IT IS TERRIBLE WHAT AN ORTHODOX JEW COULD DO TO ANOTHER JEW. THIS PERSON SHOULD BE FINED AND NEVER BE GIVEN AN ALIYAH TO THE TORAH.

If this is something the person engaged in over a long period of time the person should be prosecuted by the DA or US Attorney (mail fraud?).

If this is a recent abberation born out of desperate personal circumstances, then perhaps he should be dealt with more leniently.

The idea that this should be be dealt with by rabbis is mistaken, with all due respect, for several reasons.

First, which rabbis? Who appoints or elects anybody the “representatives” of the community? The only representatives of a community in the USA are their elected representatives.

Second, the rabbis are conflicted. Some or all may have been involved in giving the hashgacha and may have moral, civil or criminal liabilty through neglect or, hopefully not, deliberate conspiracy.

Third, under US law a criminal act such as fraud is a crime gainst the people, not against the individual. Therefore, nobody can grant michilah to the crook(s) involved.

Fourth, the police and DA have investigative abilities and expertise whereas the rabbis do not have the authority or capability to get to the bottom of this matter.

There are other cogent reasons, but the above should suffice.

It is a real shame and disgrace what happened here. This is not something that should be sweeped under the rug[Business as usual]. The truth is that the haschgocho is as good as YOU being able to trust the owner, because what stops the owner[where only the haschgocho has the key to the premises]from coming to the premises at three in the morning with a locksmith and making copies of the key? The best precaution that can be taken is that any establishment that works with meat or for that matter preparation of food must have a maschgiach temidi and special locks have to be put on ALL OUTSIDE DOORS OF THE PREMISES with closed circuit cameras going to a central monitoring point[with an alarm system that can’t be bypassed in case the owner trys bringing a locksmith at nite to make duplicate keys]. In addition cameras should be set up throughout the premises that can be monitored from that central point. This equipment has to be checked on a daily basis to make sure that there is no hanky panky. If the owners do not agree to this then they should not be given haschgocho or the haschgocho should have to make it known that the owner did not agree to the cameras and let the public decide if they want to shop there.

As far as the one who gave the haschgocho goes,he has no excuse. How did he not know that for 2-6 months the butcher had not been getting any shipments from Kiryas yoel or Vineland? If he went in a couple of times a week and checked the chickens he should have realised what was going on. All haschgochos from now on should be checking with suppliers if the butchers, takeouts, caterers etc. are getting the fresh products where they claim they are getting it from and every couple of weeks checking back with suppliers to make sure that what was delivered and whats in the store matches up.

Lets see if FINALLY something is really going to be done or if this is BUSINESS LIKE USUAL as with the KOSHER SPOT deal in Flatbush[Where he had a previous store he was caught with awhile back and still he got Haschgocho].

To end the father of the one who gave the Haschgocho in monse was a Yeche and a NETUREI KARTE member. Couldn’t have happened to a better person [What goes around comes around].

THE ABISHDE NEVER SLEEPS! WE CANT FOOL HIM.
It’s chodesh Elul so I hope that ALL of KLAL YISROEL learns a lesson from this{Including myself] that the ABISHDE is sending us a very important message.

It isn’t hard to see how this man justified this deception in his own mind – after all, according to the talmud, poultry is parve. Therefore poultry cannot be “treif.” So why pay more for “kosher” chicken? It’s this sort of intellectual dishonesty that makes these types of scandals so prevalent in ultra-orthodoxy and even orthodox communities.

Once again, the question of “how could an orthodox person do this” is misplaced. How can you call a man who does this “orthodox”? That seems so contradictory. What would he have to do to not to be orthodox – turn on a light? It sounds like he just purposefully – for profit- caused many hundreds of orthodox Jews to unintentionally violate a central mitzvah.

do anyone know if the new process of needles in hatching chicken eggs what i saw at http://www.torayid.com is a problem of kashrus in all our chickens.
