Why Do Rabbis Hate Homosexuals?

Ynet has the scoop on haredi, Kahane Chai and settler plans to disrupt Jerusalem’s gay pride parade. As you read this, note the following: The Torah forbids one type of male homosexual sex, usually interpreted as anal intercourse – nothing else. And the Torah condemns that act, not the people who commit it.

With all the very good science increasingly showing what seems to be a genetic predisposition to homosexuality, one would think rabbis and other religious leaders would voice their opposition to this homosexual march in a way that shows some empathy for these people. Instead, all I see is hatred of homosexuals. Why is that? Is being a homophobic bigot now one of the Ten Commandments? Is it part of getting Orthodox rabbinic ordination? Or is it naked hatred of the Other, the same hatred that is directed at Ethiopian Jews, the Benei Menashe, and other non-white Jews?

Now if you crackers could just find a couple gay Ethiopian Jews to lynch, you’d be really happy …

This is silly noise by some segments of the Orthodox community in Israel. Hopefully they’ll shout a lot and keep people from hurting others while the parade goes on as planned.

I’m curious though, what research shows genetic predisposition for homosexuality?

  2. “Some segments”? Haredim, Sefardim, Settlers and the extreme right. Who’s not involved? Shalom Hartman?

I am Gay-friendly, and dislike homophobia, so I agree with your initial post. The above is just a rant. I am disturbed by the increasing bitterness of the blog. I want to save Judaism- from racism, homophobia, and rabbi-worship. I don’t want to destroy it. Some of the posts, by you and others, are beginning to resemble Yevsekzia- the old Jewish branch of the SOviet Communist Party. If Judaism, (and theism in general) is so pernicious, why not thank the Cold Empty Universe you know better, turn out the lights and go home? In that case who cares what happens amoung the Flying Spaghetti Monster worshippers?

Dean Hamer had a paper published in the journal “Science” (one of the biggies of the research world) in the 90’s that investigated the existance of a marker on the X chromosome that could be a factor in genetic predisposition for male homosexuality. He had noticed that there was an increased frequency of male homosexuality along maternal lines (since the marker would be on the X chromosome, it has nothing to “temper” it on the Y).

Although not much published work has resulted from this paper, it’s still a tasty field of study. We know that homosexual behavior exists in the animal kingdom, so we can’t honestly look at it as unnatural to nature. So how does same-sex attraction work? There’s obviously a biological basis, but we haven’t found it yet.

The problem with dealing with homosexuality today is the intense level of politicization associated with it. I disagree with your term “good science” because, in fact, the science has been quite bad. Homosexuality was removed from the American Psychiatric Association’s guide book, the DSM, not by scientific evidence showing that it isn’t a mental disorder but by a show of hands at one of their annual meetings. Imagine depression or schizophrenia getting that treatment! Secondly, there are more studies showing that homosexuality is a deviant behaviour than those “suggesting” (because it’s all still just implied) that it is genetic.
There are two reasons for the harsh reaction of the religious world to the upcoming parade. For many people, I agree it’s simple ignorant hatred. These same people are ready to throw rocks at any number of groups. However, there is a second group that must be considered.
If the gay lobby really wants to have a parade in Israel, there are many places they could have held it without creating a fuss. I can’t imagine having the parade in Tel Aviv or Haifa would arouse the same level of anger that holding it in Yerushalayim is. Why was the Holy City chosen? Specifically because it would arose anger. Just like Rome before it, Yerushalayim was specifically picked because there is a large, devout and anti-homosexual population there. Over the years the gay lobby has, with the help of the organized Left, evolved from demanding acceptance in society (no problem) to confrontation with society. Homosexuality makes you uncomfortable? Well we’ll just show it in your face and show you that you have no right to feel that way! Not suprisingly, there is a backlash. And please don’t be fooled by their pleas of fear. Ths negative attention they are getting is exactly what they want. In countries like the US where gay couples can have have civil unions that are legally indistinguishable from marriage, the gay lobby has not ceased its demands for more and more rights.
In that light, the anger of this group becomes more understandable.

Your comments are in the realm of derash. And excuse me poor derash at that. Of course Judaism condems the sins not the sinners, but pray tell me were people put in the Kanoh (stocks) in Europe for Hilul Shabbes or was the sin placed in the stocks. Do Rabbis in Israel condem the Chilul Shabbes , of course but they also condem those who are mechalel Shabbes and eat Treifa. The pig is an abomination , but those Jews who eat pig are not given a pass either.
Thus Judaism in reality condemms the sinners too. If there would be no sinners, would there be sins ??
In this case its the Gay community that wants a different standard , ie criticize their activities , but not themselves.Should we do the same as far as intermarriage goes ? lets condem intermarriage but give the intermarried Maftir Yonah on Yom Kippur ?
    This friends is not Judaism.

I do not believe that homosexuality etc should be persecuted, but it should not be ignored or sanctioned either.
Should we condemm child abuse but give the abusers a free pass ??
There is also the concept of Kedoshim Tihyu in Judaism nad the behavior of the Gay community as portrayed in the popular media hardly fits either RAshis or Ramban’s definition of Kedoshim tihyu.

Garnel you speak the truth. I wonder who was threatened or who was paid money to get that joke of a vote on the floor.
No doubt the same people who lobbied to make sure that Doctors were hamstrung in dealing with AIDS initially back in the 80,s as you would with any life threatening disease. If they diagnosed someone with AIDS
or HIV, they were, under pain of ruin, forbidden to report it to any agencies or even the persons partner who you would think if not infected already would have the right to know of the danger in case the infected partner could not bring themselves to tell them.

Homosexuality is a form of attachment disorder, and it is actually much more treatable than other forms. Regardless of what the gay lobby wants you to believe, people have been cured of homosexuality and gone on to have happy normal lives. And whether or not anyone is willing to admit this, there is nothing ambiguous about the prohibition against male homosexuality in the Torah. To say some people have a genetic predisposition is a red herring. Some people have a genetic predisposition to drug addiction, to alcoholism, to violence, or to depression. So what? We expect them to get treatment, not wallow in their dysfunction. Why should homosexuality be any different? In everyday life, we all have to squelch our natural tendencies in one say or another – it’s about self control, not genetics or lack thereof.

  9. “Some of the posts, by you and others, are beginning to resemble Yevsekzia- the old Jewish branch of the SOviet Communist Party.”

Call it tough love. Haredim speak in inflated terms. Ever hear a gadol speak? Everything is balck and white. Haredim good, everyone else bad. Nuance is not something they easily catch.

  10. The so-called curing of homosexuals is much less successful that you think. I saw a study several years ago that showed a recidivism rate over 90%. Whatever causes male-male attraction, it is not easily changed. I haven’t seen any work on female-female attraction, although I would think the results would be similar. However, it is easier for women to fake hetrosexuality than for men.

“And the Torah condemns [the] act, not the people who commit it.”

See what Rashi says concerning Potiphar’s intentions when he bought Joseph as a house slave. Basically, the person who only INTENDED to commit the act was punished directly. Likewise, the Torah prohibits a “kadeish” or a “kadeisha” (promiscuous man or woman) to exist in our communities.

In sum, the Torah does condem the people that engage in prohibited activity. Granted, however, the condemnations do not differentiate between homo- and hetero- activities of this nature. Accordingly, should there be a “Straight Pride” parade in the future I expect similar behavior from the same suspects in the article.

There are 2 types of homosexuals: One is a learned deviant behavior which may come about as a result of a traumatic experience such as a teenage boy seduced by an older man. This type can be corrected through the proper therapy. The second type are people born this way thruogh a genetic disposition. This type cannot be helped.
What to do with people in the second group? We CANNOT steer them towards marriage or we will ruin the life of some innocent girl. Nor can we in the religious community accept their behavior as the Torah calls it an abomination. The only thing we can advise them to do is remain celibate. I pity these people who are born this way through no fault of their own.

  13. TM

Although there were suggestions that homosexuality is genetic and some suggestions that there are differences in brain patters between homosexuals and heterosexuals, to my knowledge there is no scientific evidence that explains or shows a genetic predisposition to homosexuality.

I agree that many groups are on the anti-parade bandwagon but I still think it’s leaders trying to make a lot of noise while most of their “constituents” don’t consider this a serious issue. I hope, at least, that I’m right about this.

Interesting re the prhibition of anal intercourse. Judaism insists on the separation of life and death ( a divorcement from Egyptian religion?)and what is anal intercourse but the literal, physical connecting of life to death?

“there is no scientific evidence that explains or shows a genetic predisposition to homosexuality.”

A lack of scientific evidence is not terribly troubling to me. Just so long as we keep having reasonable hypotheses, people like me get to keep on working in various fields of research. Before the 1950’s, there was no evidence of DNA in a helical form, but that wasn’t because it didn’t exist.

Whether or not we’re comfortable reconciling it with our moral or theological views, there is some kind of biological, and yes, genetic basis for behavior, including homosexuality. Whether there’s a “gay gene” or not is inconsequential- genetics doesn’t work that way. Time to accept that and go on.

    hmmm
    “Why Do Rabbis Hate Homosexuals?”
it wouldn’t be that bad if the rabbis had zero tolerance for CHILD MOLESTERS!!
But instead these pedophiles are defended to some extent and the righteous accusers are defamed or worse

  17. Schneur

By the way lets not ignore a connection , perhaps subtle between main line Homosexual behavior and many of the child molestation cases in the Charedi world, which by pure coincidence almost always involves only young boys …
