It’s Up To The Government

Elliot Pasik, who worked with the RCA on its Clergy Abuse resolution and is also close to haredi leadership writes:

The Torah demands a justice system. Tsedek tsedek tirdof… Its incumbent upon the Jews and the umos ha’olam. Might there be occasional error? Of course, but G-d tells us to establish courts in any event.

The child sex abuse literature I have read indicates that the vast majority of reported cases are true. I recommend, Salter, "Predators". Where false accusations do occur is in the age range below 5 or 6, where toddlers can be coached by social workers and psychologists hired by DAs. That’s what happened in the Mass. case, the one I think Tal Benschar is referring to. I’m unfamiliar with the NJ case.

Every case of child sex abuse allegations that I’ve read about, or have become personally aware of, made by frum children, has been true, in my professional opionion.

Other than the criminal justice system, which will put a sex offender on the government registries, there is no mechanism in the Jewish world for barring violent and sexual offenders from our schools. So there are no "other ways" to handle this situation, as Tal Benschar writes, and when it has been attempted in the past, there have been tragic results -continued child abuse in other school venues.

I‘ve been adocating for a yeshiva/day school-wide mechanism for several years, and it has not been done, and based on Aguda’s Thursday night session, I do not expect it will be done. It is apparent that far greater Government oversight over the nonpublic schools is required.
Elliot Pasik, Esq.

But haredi political influence gained through block voting and Agudath Israel have consistently blocked this governmental oversight. It will take criminal indictments of rabbis who cover up abuse to change anything. And that cannot come soon enough.

  1. Elliot Pasik is a rare gem. He understands the problem with laser accuracy. So do you Shmarya, these criminals will be treated as such. Finally the police and other law enforcement agencies are involved. Mr. Lesher Esq. gets a lot of credit as well.

I’ve always had a fascination with the way people can have two personalities with opposite priorities. A man can have the strictest standards for kashrus but have no problems abusing a helpless child. More than putting them behind bars (although that would be a necessary start), these people need help to break down the barriers between their two halves so they can develop the moral restraint they need to be permitted to walk freely anywhere.

Looking forward to lots of indictments of our fearless leaders in the coming year.

I bet part of the problem is to explicitly admit that a ‘shomer shabbos’ individual can be evil. Then it openly admits that such a individual is not ‘G-d fearing’ Part of the requirement for being ‘witnesses’ kosher butcher etc is to be ‘shomer shabbos’ so that we can ‘trust’ them.

A shochet who for commits sexual sins but is shomer shabbos is not disqualified the reason is that sexual urge is built into the man’s nature it’s usually above seichel (logic and reason) and few people can control it as Garnel Ironheart points out above.

Rabbi Yaakov Emden points out here : on the very last page
Rabbi Yaakov Emden’s responsa regarding pilegesh. http://pilegesh.blogspot.com/2006/10/rabbi-yaakov-emdens-answer-regarding.html
That one shouldn’t try to be “excessively righteous” or he might become “excessively wicked”. May they all get pilagshim instead of abusing children.

  9. I received this letter from The Awareness Center last week. I wanted to make everyone aware of it. I’m a strong supporter of this organization. I’m hoping you will be too!

The Fate of The Awareness Center is in your hands
    http://www.theawarenesscenter.org

For the last four years, The Awareness Center has touched the lives of countless survivors and family members of survivors. We have brought the issue of sexual violence to the consciousness of thousands of rabbis, cantors, and Jewish community leaders. Throughout the last year The Awareness Center’s site has been averaging around 1/2 million hits per month.

When a survivor calls and asks for our help in finding a therapist, we utilize a network of professionals and do our best to hand-pick referrals that meet the individual’s particular needs. When an person calls us in search of help and support, average telephone are over an hour long. At times–especially around holidays and other stressful times–these contacts translate to countless hours of assistance. It is not unusual for us to receive calls from offenders and even probation officers who are seeking help for a parolee. Survivors, Family Members of Survivors and offenders–we do our best to help them find a qualified therapist to work with them.

The Awareness Center has close to fifty articles which were written by our executive and advisory board members; many on issues that you will not find anywhere else. Our articles have been quoted often in other publications. Numerous journalist and researchers have contacted us over the years looking for information and we’ve done our best to assist them in their work.

The Awareness Center operates a daily electronic newsletter and offers eleven self-help networking groups for survivors and family members of survivors. Networking groups for rabbis and victims advocated are also available.

Our multi-faceted international operations have been going on full time for some years now, and have been maintained in spite of little or no funding. As a result of scarce funding, most operating expenses have been repeatedly coming out of The Awareness Center volunteers’ own pockets and on top of uncounted volunteer hours. Survivors in the thousands, as well as their supporters and the professionals who work with them have all reached out to The Awareness Center for help. The number of hits on our web-page alone bears testimony to the service The Awareness Center provides. We would like nothing more than to continue to provide support, information, and assistance to survivors; and education to those who claim to and/or wish to support them. However, we can no longer continue to cover operating expenses out of our own pockets and are facing a financial crisis–WITHOUT IMMEDIATE MONETARY SUPPORT THE AWARENESS CENTER WILL NEED TO SHUT ITS DOORS WITHIN A FEW WEEKS.

Over the many months and weeks and days and hours of our operation, The Awareness Center received frequent calls and emails of thanks for the help we provided and for shining a light on issues that have been taboo for so long, yet a painful reality to many.

If you believe that sexual abuse and assault are wrong, that survivors of harm are worthy of support, and perpetrators of true assistance; if you believe that children have the right to speak up when they are hurt and to be protected so that no more harm comes to them (or others after them); if you believe that our communities are worthy of healing from the inside-out and that as Jews we are meant to be and CAN be light-unto-the-nations–please help The Awareness Center survive to forward these important goals.

Help us by shining the light–your light–so we can continue. Even a little light can illuminate the darkness, and every little bit can help. Reach into your heart and pocket for whatever amount you believe our children’s safety is worth and whatever amount you can spare. You can help save lives. Anyone who saves even one life of Israel, it is said that it is as if they’d saved a whole world! You have it within your power to help save many.

Help us so that survivors can have a place to reach out to. Help us so that we can end harm in our communities and foster pathways of understanding and healing; so that together we can abandon the old ways of secrecy and shame.

Help us keep hope alive. Please take a moment to support those who’d been hurt and seek help. Please show that you care. http://www.theawarenesscenter.org/donationbrochure.pdf

  10. To Jewish Survivor

I looked thru your site, and one case in particular fascinated me and that was regarding the Rabbis Mattityahu/Matis??? Weinberg because I have read his books and enjoyed them.
Is there any update, its all old news and if charges have not been brought then please clarify what is going on.
If no indictement is coming then perhaps a update retraction is in order cause if you drag someones name thru mud and so much as imtimate “Oh hes guilty, but we cant get him into court, its a conspicracy of silence of course, but not to fear we know anyways he is guilty” is not condusive to my understanding of innocent until proven guilty.
If there is some new news then please post link.

    I thank you.

  11. UOJ TO RABBI SALOMON:

WHAT DID YOU DO SINCE THE TIME YOU DISCOVERED THAT THE MARGULIES/KOLKO CRIMINAL AND DEVIANT ACTS WERE TRUE? YOU SENT THE CONSUMNATE CON-MAN ARON TWERSKI TO TORAH TEMIMAH TO VOUCH FOR MARGULIES’S INTEGRITY! SHAME ON YOU, SHAME ON THE AGUDAH, SHAME ON TORAH UMESORAH. YOU MATISYAHU SOLOMON ATTENDED A GROUNDBREAKING IN LAKEWOOD FOR LIPA MARGULIES’S NEW YESHIVA TEMIMADIKER MOLESTERS AFTER ALL KNEW THAT MARGULIES IS A CRIMINAL! SLIPPED THROUGH YOUR FINGERS DID THEY, OR DID YOU “HIGH-FIVE” MARGULIES & KOLKO?

I WILL CONTINUE TO MOCK YOU AND SCOFF YOU AND YOUR ILK UNTIL YOU MAKE OUR KINDERLACH THE ABSOLUTE TOP PRIORITY OF HAREDI JUDAISM. NOT KOLLEL, NOT FRAUDULENT KAVOD HATORAH, NOT CONTRIVED DAAS TORAH, BUT OUR HAILEGE KINDERLACH!

The lying mouth does not fall far from the Haredi hat!

Now let us rise from our computers and proclaim loudly and clearly to the Ribono Shel Olam that we thank him for the ability to think and discern right from wrong.
“ATAH CHONAIN L’ADAM DAAT UMELAMAID L’ENOSH BINAH”. And to that we drink the kool-aid!
